Aren’t
kids singing less altogether?
And has our cultural music been replaced?
Yes,
both children and adults have become listeners more frequently than
singers. And yes, with the current
popular music market, both children and adults are inundated with popular
music. The lyrics to these popular
songs are usually unsuitable for both children and psychologically healthy
adults. Almost all of these songs
will disappear rather quickly.
Listeners need a well-rounded diet which includes the folk songs of
their American heritage, something of lasting value, in addition to the top
40. Sesame Street has some great songs,
and so does Disney, but the songs of your children’s folk heritage here in
America is something worth keeping. In
Hungary, school children sing nothing but the children’s folk songs of their
heritage, usually a cappella, through fourth grade. Almost all nations value their heritage. We need to value our heritage, too. Yes, the songs have been replaced with
popular music.
